Brave New Words

This weekend, while I perused Youtube looking for some more great spoken word poems to share with you, I came across two sites that I believe will be useful in your crafting and performing your poems. How to Get Started with Spoken Word Standards in Spoken Word Tips from Spoken Word poet Ami Mattison: “As…

The Wonder of Spoken Word

“It’s not just the adage ‘write what you know,’ it’s about gathering up all of the knowledge and experience you’ve collected up to now to help you dive into the things you don’t know.” -Sarah Kay We have been dabbling in our writing of spoken word poetry. One of our favorite poets is Sarah Kay….

To-Go Kits

In our quest to eliminate our use of disposable plastics, the eighth grade students and I are partaking in a two week challenge. We created a To-Go kit. A To-Go Kit is your own set of personal reusable items that you can take with you anywhere, so you don’t have to use and purchase single-use…

“You can be sure that the American spirit will prevail over this tragedy.”
–Colin Powell

Today we watched a video, heard accounts, and viewed some pictures from the tragic event in New York City on September 11, 2001.

The charge was to spend two days without using disposable items so that we can add a dent to the trash crisis.  Yes, it is a crisis, and one that many don’t seem to notice, or even consider. Where does garbage go when we throw it away? I suppose many don’t care as long as it does not pile up in the front yard, or the smell of trash dose not linger in the air. But where it ends up is quite frightening.

This weekend while grocery shopping I decided to choose products with the least packaging, look for products and packaging made from renewable resources, and avoid plastic packaging and containers. I choose  juice that came in glass over plastic. I brought my reusable bags to the store (even department stores). I have saved an excess of over 40 plastic bags in just two days!

I told everyone that I could about the hazard of disposable items, and I even took the refuse pledge on the site Plastic Pollution Coalition.

It was a rewarding weekend that has morphed into a lifestyle for me. I am determined to make a difference; you can too!
